Yet transforming geothermal prospects into successful, operational projects remains complex. Technical uncertainty, exploration risk, and societal acceptance all play critical roles in determining project outcomes.

This EGU26 session aims to address these challenges head‑on by fostering dialogue across disciplines. The focus is on building a comprehensive inventory of geoscience technologies—including data acquisition methods, reservoir characterisation approaches, and static and dynamic modelling techniques—alongside societal workflows applied during geothermal exploration and appraisal.

By aligning technical innovation with social considerations, the session seeks to improve our understanding of geothermal systems across diverse geological settings, reduce exploration risk, and support the safe, sustainable, and socially accepted deployment of geothermal energy.

A truly interdisciplinary conversation

The strength of this session lies in its cross‑disciplinary nature. We warmly welcome contributions from researchers and practitioners working in:

Geology and structural geology

Geophysics and geochemistry

Geomechanics and hydrogeology

Static and dynamic geomodelling

Machine learning and data‑driven approaches

We are particularly interested in case studies and applied research from a wide range of geological contexts, including sedimentary aquifers, volcanic systems, and fractured basement reservoirs.

Collaboration to accelerate geothermal deployment

A collaborative, transdisciplinary, and collegial discussion will be central to this session. By sharing successes, challenges, and lessons learned, we aim to help accelerate geothermal project development—not only across Europe, but globally.

Whether you are advancing new technologies, integrating societal perspectives, or translating research into practice, your contribution can make a meaningful impact.

Submit your abstract

We would be delighted to welcome you as a speaker. If your work connects geothermal exploration, appraisal, modelling, or societal engagement, please consider submitting an abstract to Session ERE 2.7 at EGU26.

Let’s work together to turn geothermal exploration into successful, sustainable energy projects.

Deadline: 15-01-2026

[1

post-1286","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
