BATTA SITE

The Batta site, located in an urban/industrial area near Budapest with a population of several tens of thousands, has geothermal potential that needs validation to support future geothermal projects aimed at powering the Százhalombatta oil refinery with electricity and heat. The Hungarian Paleogene Basin, characterized by epicontinental marine sediments from the late Eocene to early Miocene, has undergone several tectonic phases, creating geological complexity. Previous 2D seismic surveys identified deep basin areas with high water production and temperatures suitable for geothermal use.Due to urban noise interference, seismic data at Batta is challenging to collect. The URGENT project aims to produce high-quality data despite these conditions, advancing understanding of the basin and assessing geothermal potential to guide future geothermal developments for refinery power and heat.

What will be done?

  • 2D seismic survey to test and validate the seismic acquisition technologies, methods and data (post-)processing techniques.
